‘Still by the Water’
A personal view of Chichester Harbour
Introduction
Chichester Harbour is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the south coast of England straddling the West Sussex and Hampshire borders. I am very fortunate to live nearby with my wife and family. In fact we have done so for the past 25 years, so I have come to know the area well but it is only recently that I have started to photograph its landscape. As a consequence a more intimate understanding of this richly varied environment is being captured in camera and presented in monochrome.
It all began in the autumn of 2016 shortly after I had taken early retirement from the property industry in April. Free from the responsibilities and stresses of being a business owner I now had the time to truly explore the harbour on virtually a daily basis. The camera hangs over my shoulder and I usually have a dog by my side. Our English Cocker Spaniel is of course the motivation to be out in all weathers!
My preferred time of year is late autumn through to early spring. The quality of the light and changeable weather come together to provide me with the photographic opportunities I most enjoy. There is a stillness here, a place which allows quiet contemplation with nature, yet is so close to busy roads and cities. This is of course my own view of the Harbour; a personal portrait and artistic interpretation of what I see and feel as I explore the footpaths around the tidal inlets, mudflats and the surrounding countryside.
Exhibition
A collection of ‘Still by the Water’ photographs were displayed at the Oxmarket Centre of Arts in Chichester, as part of a group exhibition by The Image Circle, between 14th and 19th November 2017. The twenty four images exhibited are all shown below.

Fabulous slideshow……I really like that one of a glove on the post, as well as the harbour(?) itself with the dark clouds overhead.

Hi there, I’ve just really enjoyed having a good look your site. I especially like this Chichester project with its grand vistas accompanied by closer detail. You’ve literally just taken me from my living room in Japan to a small rowing boat weaving up those channels, listening to the birds and the water. That you provided the map to accompany this set of superb images speaks volumes about your approach to landscape photography! Thanks! Tom
